For DJ CO.KR, every production credit traces back to the same source: a gap in his DJ set that needed filling

Midway through the conversation, DJ CO.KR caught himself. He'd just said that Skepta and JME rapping over his track meant more to him than Fred again.. playing it — then paused, recalibrated. "Obviously Fred again.. was great too," he added. "But I got into grime because of Skepta." The correction landed softer than the original admission, which is exactly why the original admission matters.
What the Booth Teaches
DJ CO.KR traces everything back to The Henz Club, a hip-hop venue in Sangsu where he started under DJ YTST sometime around 2015. He wasn't just learning theory — he was watching. When UK garage and baseline act Royal-T came through, he studied the way loops were layered and timed, then absorbed the technique into his own sets. "All the skills I use now," he said, "I basically stole from the people around me." The path to Itaewon opened through a broken USB stick: a guest DJ couldn't play, the slot was empty, and the youngest DJ in the room volunteered. The crowd responded. DEADEND crew started booking him for Cakeshop. A Boiler Room set followed. None of it was planned — it accumulated.
The Track He Needed
He didn't start producing because he wanted to be a producer. He started because his DJ sets had a specific problem: the moment when energy dips and something needs to pull it back. His solution was a dubplate request to Riko Dan of Roll Deep — a classic UK funky track with a custom shoutout recorded over it. When the response came back, he rearranged it: Baltimore club drums, a siren, a bassline. That became SOUNDBWOY, his debut EP. "I wasn't thinking about it as a track," he said. "I just needed something I could mix in and out of within my set." The same logic carried through to ILL E SAM SA, his 2024 collaboration EP with h4rdy on Steel City Dance Discs — the one Skepta and JME ended up rapping on, the one Fred again.. played out. When asked which meant more, he didn't hesitate before answering with the MCs' names.
Translation, Not Compromise
The moves look like crossover from the outside: Solabeam, then Fool's Gold Records, then Area X. He doesn't reject that reading entirely. Watching DJ YouTube sets hit a million views changed something in him — the idea that DJing was only for clubs, only for insiders, started to feel like a limitation rather than an identity. But the music itself hasn't shifted. The Area X material still runs on UK bass frequencies. "I make this UK sound — breaks, house — and I have to explain it to people," he said. "Everything I do outside the club is about making that explanation easier." When the explanation doesn't land, he builds his own room for it: Ghetto-Ray, the party he runs, where the crowd already knows what they're there for and waits through the build. "When it's my own party, they wait for me," he said. "Whatever I play."
The Fool's Gold connection came from the same throw. At AOMIX FEST, he saw that A-Trak was booked right after him — so he dropped one of his own productions as the last record of his set and offered a handshake during the changeover, when the Fool's Gold founder had no choice but to listen. “Let me show you a track I made.” Back in LA, A-Trak received a batch of demos and wrote back that he wanted them on Fool's Gold. That became Top Shotta EP, made with h4rdy. His first pair of headphones, he added, had been a Fool's Gold collab.
Near the end, he admitted he'd spent the past year or two heads-down on music and hadn't promoted any of it domestically — not the Steel City Dance Discs release, not Fool's Gold. "I realized that wasn't right," he said, without much drama. The More Time Records EP with KimHan is coming. After that, he said, something on an even bigger label. In June he flies to Europe with the SCR crew — a radio slot or two, mostly just to travel. The kid who got into grime because of Skepta is heading to the music's home turf, just to hang out.

인터뷰 도중 DJ CO.KR은 스스로 말을 끊었다. Skepta 때문에 그라임이라는 장르를 좋아하게 됐다고, 그래서 Skepta와 JME가 자기 트랙 위에서 랩을 했다는 사실이 Fred again..이 그 트랙을 튼 것보다 더 좋았다고. 진행자 이대화가 “이것도 멋있는데요“라고 받아치자, 그는 잠깐 멈췄다가 “당연히 프레드 어게인도 좋았지만“이라고 덧붙였다. 그 한 박자의 틈이 이 대화 전체를 설명한다.
부스 옆에서 훔친 것들
DJ CO.KR의 시작점은 The Henz Club이다. 상수에 있던 그 클럽에서 그는 DJ YTST에게 레슨을 받고, 360 Sounds와 DEADEND 크루의 형들 옆에서 일을 했다. 배움의 방식은 단순했다. 해외 아티스트가 오면 부스 옆에서 지켜봤다. Royal-T가 루프를 현란하게 쓰는 걸 보고 따라했고, 그렇게 익힌 기술들이 지금 자기 셋의 뼈대가 됐다고 했다. “제가 쓰고 있는 기술들이 다 형들한테 뺏어서 썼던 기술이에요.“ 이태원으로 넘어간 건 DEADEND 파티에서 게스트 DJ의 USB가 먹통이 된 날 밤이었다. 막내 DJ였던 그가 자청해서 올라갔고, 그날 분위기가 좋았다. Boiler Room 셋은 그렇게 자연스럽게 따라왔다.
DJ셋에 필요한 트랙을 만들다
프로듀싱을 시작한 계기를 묻자 그는 이렇게 답했다. 셋 안에서 처질 때가 있는데, 그럴 때 영국 MC가 자기 이름을 불러주면서 분위기 전환이 되는 트랙이 있으면 좋겠다고 생각했다. 그래서 Riko Dan에게 dubplate를 요청했고, 거기에 볼티모어 클럽 드럼과 사이렌, 베이스라인을 얹어 트랙을 완성했다. 그게 데뷔 EP SOUNDBWOY였다. “트랙적으로 생각하지 않았던 거 같아요. 그냥 DJ셋 안에서 녹일 수 있는 트랙이 나는 필요해.“ 이후 h4rdy와 함께 만든 ILL E SAM SA는 Steel City Dance Discs에서 나왔고, Skepta와 JME가 그 위에 랩을 얹었다. Fred again..이 그 트랙을 틀었을 때 도파민이 터졌다고 했지만, 그는 두 MC의 이름을 먼저 불렀다.
설명하기 위해 넓어지는 것
Solabeam 합류, Fool's Gold Records에서의 Top Shotta EP 발매, 그리고 Area X 크루 결성. 외부에서 보면 언더그라운드 DJ가 점점 바깥으로 나오는 서사처럼 읽힌다. 그는 그 독해를 완전히 부정하지 않는다. DJ 유튜브 셋이 100만 조회수를 넘는 걸 보면서 “나 언더그라운드야, 이게 쿨한 거야“라는 생각이 바뀌었다고 했다. 하지만 Area X에서 발표한 음악은 여전히 UK 베이스 사운드다. “제 작업물은 그런 거 같아요. 이런 UK 사운드, 브레이크, 하우스 음악을 하면서 어쨌든 그들에게 설명을 해야 되잖아요. 그 설명을 더 쉽게 하기 위한 행보인 거 같아요.“ 타협이 아니라 번역이라는 것. 그리고 번역이 잘 안 통하는 날엔 직접 파티를 만든다. 자기가 좋아하는 UK 베이스와 개러지를 틀 수 있는 자리를.
Fool's Gold와의 인연도 같은 방식으로 만들어졌다. AOMIX FEST에서 자기 다음 순서가 A-Trak이라는 걸 알고, 셋 마지막 곡으로 자작 트랙을 드랍한 뒤 악수를 청했다. “내가 만든 트랙 한번 보여 줄게.” 들으라는 거 아니냐고 진행자가 웃자 그는 바로 인정했다. 교체하는 동안엔 계속 들어야 하니까. 이후 LA로 돌아간 A-Trak에게 데모 여러 곡을 보냈고, Fool's Gold에서 내고 싶다는 답이 왔다. 그렇게 h4rdy와 함께한 Top Shotta EP가 나왔다. 첫 헤드폰이 Fool's Gold 콜라보 제품이었다는 사람에게 그 답장이 어떤 무게였을지는, 굳이 설명이 필요 없다.
인터뷰 말미에 그는 지난 1~2년간 음악에만 몰입하면서 국내 채널 프로모션을 하나도 안 했다고 털어놨다. Steel City Dance Discs, Fool's Gold Records에서 음악이 나왔는데도. “이러면 안 되겠다“고 스스로 결론을 냈고, 이번 More Time Records 릴리스를 계기로 나섰다. 6월에는 유럽에 간다. SCR 친구들이 간다길래 나도 갈래 했고, 라디오 한두 개 틀고 오는 겸이라고 했다. Skepta 때문에 그라임이라는 장르를 좋아하게 됐다는 사람이, 이제 그 음악의 동네로 놀러 가는 길이다.
