The solo project of a GroovyRoom producer who spent years writing chart songs. IÖN debuted in 2024 with CÖURAGE, moving between trance, techno and house, and founded AREA X to bring Seoul's DJs together. XEÖUL, released this August, was made with them track by track — DPR Artic, Giriboy and BRLLNT among them — under one rule: can you play it at any venue in Seoul?

IÖN on learning to enjoy music again

Hosted by LEEDAEHWA

IÖN sat down for this conversation straight from a techno set, still a little hazy. “Not sure I'm in my right mind.” By his own count it had been the busiest three months of his life: the girl group TUIDE project, wedding prep, and the final touches on XEÖUL, which he mixed and mastered himself. Asked how it felt to have the album out, he started with one line. “It's such a relief.”

The Question He Couldn't Answer

He had loved music since middle and high school, made it his job, and was charting young. That was where the paradox began. “And as that happened, ironically, I think I lost the ability to just enjoy music.” Success came with the pressure to keep proving himself, and with a songwriter's dependence on others: a track he loved could still flop if the label didn't push it or the artist wasn't fully into it. Around 2018 and 2019, with GroovyRoom — the production duo behind 2017's 'Sunday' with Heize and Jay Park — at its peak, he couldn't picture what he'd be doing in ten years. COVID made the feeling bigger. Around then his GroovyRoom partner Hwimin was putting out an album as Lil Moshpit, and IÖN began to ask whether he had ever done hip-hop because he loved it, or had simply been realizing the hip-hop Hwimin loved. “Hit or miss, who's going to criticize you for doing what you love?” He went straight to DJ lessons.

Like a Baby Bird

His teacher was FALLENS, who now runs a club in Itaewon. You can learn the skills from anybody, IÖN said; he wanted the culture — the way FALLENS thinks, his whole attitude toward it. He paid for a few months of lessons, and right after COVID ended he was out at clubs about four nights a week. “It sounds odd, but I wasn't there to party. I was behind the booth like a baby bird, photographing good tracks, jotting them down in my notes.” He went out on the floor, too, to see why people go wild at a particular moment. Producing and DJing, he found, are different worlds. “If you sit a producer and a pure DJ down together, I don't think they'd even be able to talk.” The technical side took about a year. The next level was track selection, and knowing how to kill your own ego.

Techno first reached him as sleep music. A few years back he put it on while drifting off and heard how the low, hypnotic kind starts from a tiny theme and, 32 bars later, has become the theme. “I realized this music is having a conversation purely through energy.” In years of commercial writing he had never been able to listen to music without vocals. The sleep music slid into ambient. Around 2024, his Spotify Wrapped was all ambient, which, as he put it, you don't really listen to by artist. “I couldn't get any real data out of it.”

Any Venue in Seoul

CÖURAGE was a message album, shaped by melodic techno, melodic house and progressive — too low-energy for a festival, too big for a club. Throwing a release party for it taught him how few people would come out for him and for that genre alone. He couldn't do it alone, so he set up AREA X. Every track on XEÖUL is a collaboration, and each one started with a conversation: what a DJ was playing, what blew up when they dropped it, what the clubs felt like. “This isn't really my album, it's everyone's album.” He made BOJVCK the muse of AREA X. BRLLNT's sketch arrived titled 'Ghettotech', after the fast, raunchy Detroit club style; as IÖN arranged it, it drifted away from the classic ghettotech sound, and he suggested 'Haebang Bounce' instead, which BRLLNT loved. “I still don't know what genre it is.” The title track, '폰 내려놔' (put your phone down), began with a talk with DPR Artic, and with what IÖN saw playing before and after rappers: people on their phones right in front of him. “When the first three rows are all doing that, it stings a little.” The album's one rule: “Can you play it at any venue in Seoul?” Four on the floor, then breaks, then UK garage. “That total mash-up is the sound of Seoul right now, I think.”

He used to believe that playing what you think is cool is what makes a DJ. Working with the AREA X members changed that, and he says it plainly now: “the essence of this job is the party.”

Listen to the Studio Session

Recorded at XIMXIM BAR, Seoul, on 12 September 2026. Peak-time techno is what he really loves, he said, but these days he rarely gets to play it: AREA X shows are about riding with the crowd, techno is about focus. Asked to play whatever he doesn't usually get to play, he went all in. He had come thinking they were only shooting the mix.
