A producer and DJ behind music for Dynamic Duo, Loco, Colde and pH-1. Loco's “It Takes Time” went to #1 on the charts, and APRO is a crew member at Studio Concrete. Lately: the BEAUTY FROM DIRTY series, tracks made for APRO's DJ sets.

In the dancing days, APRO practiced alone in front of the mirror, in a studio or at home. “When the practice ends, nothing's left except your own satisfaction. So then, why am I dancing?”

Loco's “It Takes Time” went to number one, and producing is still the main job, as APRO tells it. Somewhere between 2017 and 2019, APRO also started DJing, and hasn't stopped. After the set for this Studio Session, the host's first real question went there: “So why do you DJ?”

A way to get out front

The overseas producers who influenced APRO were more like frontmen, out in front of their own work and proving they were stars. Korean producers, as APRO saw it, tended to hide a bit, working in places people don't see. Neither way is cooler, APRO added, but “my own personality is to get out front and show myself as a player.” Showing music being made was rarely possible, and instruments were not a particular strength.

Around that time FRNK, June One of Glen Check and millic were putting on shows with DJ gear as a performance tool. That was inspiring, the offers came too, and APRO started without much weight on it.

Asked whether full-time DJs ever gave APRO a hard time, the answer came from close friends: “If you're gonna do it, do it right.” Jealousy isn't behind it, in APRO's telling: “they just don't want me getting bad reviews.” APRO says the same thing when those friends produce. Asked about a fellow producer who wants to DJ, APRO would always recommend it. The case sits in the booth, in setting loops, jumping across bars with hot cues, doing a backspin into the next track: “these concepts are actually really useful elements when you're producing.”

“A kind of reward to myself”

Asked ahead of time for three defining moments as a producer, APRO named leaving WAVY, joining Studio Concrete and the release of “It Takes Time”.

Naming the exit over the day of joining WAVY was deliberate. Before going, there were long talks with the WAVY crew and with Colde, nearly in tears, and “we made a promise about what comes next.” Studio Concrete was “a world I'd only ever been able to imagine”, like stepping into a drama.

The third begins with APRO handing the credit back. The host had talked about the song as if the credit were APRO's, so the thanks went first to Loco, who wrote the original, and then to producer GRAY, whose teaching made meeting Loco possible. APRO had been producing for less than two years: “is this actually happening?” Then: “I was so overwhelmed I cried all day.” APRO had been a street dancer from a young age, and the craving to earn serious money through art went back to sixth grade. Maybe, APRO said, those tears were “a kind of reward to myself”.

Even after naming Loco and GRAY first, APRO's word for those tears points back at the self. In Korean, it is the same phrase APRO used for what remains after practice at the mirror.

Welcoming, and having your own thing

The host asked how APRO balances a small underground and a predictable mainstream, and the answer brought up the mirror. Becoming a world-class dancer means earning people's attention and love through the dancing. For music on the deeper side, the same logic holds: “I have to be a very welcoming person.” APRO tries to break difficult things down a little, “without compromising much”.

Earlier, asked what makes a DJ cool, APRO gave reasons in which being welcoming never came up. From a long list, the name APRO couldn't leave out was DJ co.kr, who spent a very long time on non-mainstream music and, APRO imagines, often wanted to quit or compromise. That story could be “real motivation — not false hope” for other DJs. Abroad, it was Max Cooper, whose work seems to APRO to carry a lot to worry about across mapping, visuals and music videos: “by the standards of a DJ mix set, it might not count as a good mix, but having your own thing is a great push for me.”

Where those two answers meet was what interested this writer most. Someone trying to break things down a little for a wide audience chose Max Cooper as a role model, for having “your own thing”, good mix or not.

In the dancing days, APRO copied and pasted G-funk, P-funk and instrumentals together in a video program called Vegas to make music for performances. Wanting to dance to self-made music was a strong pull, and producing, as APRO recalls, started around 2016. “I'm always looking for the thing only I can do.”

BEAUTY FROM DIRTY has a similar shape, this time in the booth: the idea was to make a lot of tracks to play out as a DJ. “So the new tracks are built on the music I'd normally listen to and play in my sets.”

In the Studio Session set, “AOAO” comes past the 40-minute mark and “GACH” at 50:35, both APRO tracks from BEAUTY FROM DIRTY EP.02.

둘 다 BEAUTY FROM DIRTY EP.02에 실린 APRO의 곡이다.

Recorded on 28 October 2026. Host LEEDAEHWA said there was a lot of percussion in the tracks of the set. Heavy or subtle, APRO answered, percussion-driven music “will probably stay near the very top of the genres I love”.
