Electronic music made by a dancer. Moruka learned to dance in a kids' hip-hop crew at church and went on to perform with Ambiguous Dance Company. DJing came first; in July 2026 came her debut album My Fingerprints, where bass music, jungle, breakcore and hardstyle meet. She has hosted the segment '마감 시간' on VISLA FM for about a year.

“For me, choosing words is sometimes hard”

In high school, during a stretch when Moruka stopped going to school altogether, her one routine was to go out around 3 or 4 in the morning. She'd sneak out without her parents knowing to a roller rink in an empty lot nearby and do 100 jump ropes. When she finished, she'd dance alone in the silence. Fear had swallowed her up, she said, and at the same time she wanted to feel intensely alive through dancing. That memory was reinterpreted as “8 counts dance,” a track on her debut album My Fingerprints, released in July 2026.

Moruka said it still feels strange, sometimes, to be called an electronic musician. For someone who still dances while working as a DJ and producer, labels tend to arrive a beat late. The question this conversation keeps circling is simpler: what does someone who speaks without language actually know about herself?

The body came first

Moruka learned to dance at church. When she was in fourth grade, the pastor of the church her family attended brought in a professional dancer to run a kids' hip-hop dance team — not the simple hand motions children usually do at church, but actual fundamentals. Years later she would dance with Ambiguous Dance Company.

There, she said, her small frame was a huge source of stress. To make her movements register among the company's many amazing professional dancers, she practiced two or three times as hard where no one could see her, then walked into the studio acting like it was nothing. The dream she had around that time gave her the image she's carried since: a mouse warrior in armor, running through a battlefield of lions and elephants, stabbing a lion's paw with a spear — and the huge animal could no longer walk. She woke up and landed on something simple — small but sharp and intense. Right before a moment when she has to put herself forward and can't summon the energy, she said, she listens to intense sound: it gives a narrative to her and to the space she's standing in. Intense music became a tool she reached for to ease the stress.

When dancing became a job

After leaving the dance company, Moruka spent a period making a living almost entirely by teaching dance. Once her whole day was teaching, dance started to feel like work. She said she only had so many hours a day she could love dancing, and after classes she had nothing left. The loop became a rut. At the time she was a regular viewer of a YouTube channel called Sehee123, documentary-style videos of a scene she knew nothing about, run by a DJ named KISEWA, who happened to be taking on students.

“Going from someone who dances to someone who makes people dance — wouldn't that be fun?” That thought flashed through her mind and she signed up. The entry points into electronic music had been accumulating longer. A dance company used Battles' music in a performance she caught on a student ticket; the choreographer at Ambiguous played techno every morning during warm-ups; she happened to catch IDIOTAPE's live set at Ssamzie Sound Festival and was completely hooked.

Once classes started, KISEWA turned out to be more serious than expected: around ten years of DJing meant a deep store of technique, and Moruka came away feeling this was “someone I could really learn a lot from.” DJing came first; the album came later. Events kept coming up in between, each one meaning she had to dig for music to fit its concept, so if only for work, she ended up listening widely.

Where the fingerprints land

My Fingerprints started from a simple thought: she wanted her own music inside her DJ mixes. Since she plays dance music, she'd make a dance album. But as she looked back over the moments she'd danced, her life came through more broadly. “Life isn't exactly simple,” she said. “It's tangled up with all kinds of meanings and relationships, and it's dynamic — anyone's life is.” She hadn't set out to tell her own story; following the question of where her fingerprints had landed is what led her there.

When she works, she doesn't stay seated. She dances while shaping sounds, asking what in the sound could be the focal point, and what added sound might send a body following the rhythm down a new path. Of all dance, she loved improvisation most, for the way it made her look inward for whatever movement the moment called for and find the courage to put it out. She thinks that love of the unpredictable somehow comes through in her sound. As of this interview, she has been producing for about a year and four months.

One of the reasons she loved dance, she said, was that it needed no language. When there was something she didn't want to put into words, she'd dance. The electronic music she made gave her the same thing. “Without using language, things you can't say in words get expressed through electronic sound. That gave me real freedom.” Telling her story without lyrics was, she said, actually easier: choosing words is sometimes hard for her.

My Fingerprints began as a dance record and widened into a picture of a life. When Moruka said she's grateful not to have it heard as just a dance record, she was pointing to where it ended up. She still sometimes finds the label “electronic musician” strange, and said her next move starts with looking inward to ask what stories she wants to tell. As long as that sequence holds, her music will keep landing a beat ahead of whatever genre it's filed under.
