An electronic music producer and DJ who works as an engineer at an LP pressing plant. Since the first EP Bipolar Disorder in 2019, oxymosoon has kept releasing singles and EPs, including the Sight EP on the overseas label Of Dolls And Murder in 2023 and the first vinyl, the Narcissism EP, in 2024. The debut album Inner Dance came out on 1 October 2026. With XXOK, oxymosoon also works as the duo XYXX, preparing live sets and releases.

“My music isn't dark, it's serious.”

Of all the things friends have said about oxymosoon's music, the favorite is that it brings an image to mind, or that it makes them want to create something from that image. A love of films, and of how a score heard on its own brings the scenes back, led to the working motif: visualizing sound.
What does it take for music made purely for oneself to become someone else's picture? This conversation kept circling near it.
An answer to “dark”
So many people called the music dark that oxymosoon started wondering whether it really was, and after thinking it over a lot, came to a conclusion: “My music isn't dark, it's serious.” Taking the work and its results seriously, oxymosoon added, may be what comes through.
It's probably true, oxymosoon said, that there isn't much talking. Part of it is shyness around new people. Being quiet was never the aim; oxymosoon simply chose to say only what's needed, because “When I talk too much, I end up slipping up.” That is what earns the label of the quiet type.
In DJ sets, by oxymosoon's count, original tracks have come out maybe three times at most. Very few venues can take the BPMs of those tracks, and making tracks with a club-ready attitude just to get them played out was never the goal. “I keep the identities of producing and DJing pretty clearly separated.” To this writer, that separation sounded like the most concrete form of what oxymosoon means by serious.
Misfit became a picture first
Asked why the music videos keep coming, oxymosoon said it's great when listeners picture something themselves, but “I also thought it'd be great to offer my own suggestion. I had an intention when I made it.”
With “Misfit,” from the first EP, the suggestion came from the other side. Long after the release, someone who works in film sent a message on Instagram: the track was so good that they wanted to build a short film on it. oxymosoon agreed and, on one visit to the shoot, was surprised by its scale. A long while later came word that the film would screen at Cannes in 2022. “It was a really surprising, refreshing thing to have happen.”
The first full-length album carried a film dream too: shoot a short film and release its soundtrack as the album. The moment never came, practically or in terms of ability, so the idea was put off for a while.
The first album mixed alone
The album made after putting that dream aside is Inner Dance, released on 1 October 2026. The title has two meanings. One is what friends kept saying: the music isn't openly dance music, “but it stirs up this inner dance.” The other is timing. It was around when oxymosoon started wanting to make dance tracks, and a contrarian streak ruled out obvious cliché, so the idea became a dance track of oxymosoon's own kind. Of the 11 tracks, 1, 6 and 11 are mood pieces, 2 to 5 update past styles, and 7 to 9 point ahead.
Earlier records were mixed by someone else, or co-mixed up through the Narcissism EP. This was the first full session mix done alone. “Sure, I'm still lacking and not fully ready, but I felt like my first album should be mixed by me. So I decided on my own that now was the timing.” All the tracks are “my babies,” but the slight favorite is track 9, “Ain't Nothing But,” the one that “shows exactly where I'm headed,” a direction found while making it. oxymosoon still listens to it after the release.
The Narcissism EP in 2024 was the first physical release, and since it was closer to listening music than dancefloor tracks, there was some worry about whether it would sell. After asking around, a deal was signed with a company that could distribute in Europe; some time later, 60% of the shipment had sold. oxymosoon thinks that gave a hint: “Europe's different.” Never having been to Europe, oxymosoon makes no claim to understand that culture; it was uncharted territory, and the news was deeply moving.
What this writer noticed most was the set. A DJ who has played original tracks maybe three times at most said the first MIXMIX set came out of the flow of Inner Dance, with a running order meant to echo the feel of the album's tracklist. None of the 20 tracks in the confirmed set are oxymosoon's own. It carries the album's flow through other people's records, and how closely it mirrors the album is something to hear for yourself in the Studio Session.
In the closing words, oxymosoon called making this music “a selfish act,” done purely out of love for it. So when people say they enjoyed it, “I feel so grateful and humbled.”
“내 음악은 어두운 게 아니라 진지한 거다”

옥시모순이 지인에게서 들은 말 가운데 가장 좋아하는 피드백은 음악을 들으니 어떤 이미지가 떠오른다는 말, 그리고 '이런 그림에 뭔가를 만들고 싶다'는 말이다. 영화를 좋아해서, 영화를 본 뒤 영화 음악만 따로 들어도 장면이 떠오르는 경험을 좋아한다. 그래서 작업 모티브를 '청각의 시각화'라고 부른다.
혼자 좋아서 만든 음악이 다른 사람의 그림이 되려면 무엇이 필요할까. 이번 토크는 그 질문 근처를 여러 번 지나갔다.
어둡다는 말에 내놓은 답
음악이 어둡다는 말을 주변에서 너무 많이 들어서, 내 음악이 어둡나 하는 생각을 많이 해 봤다고 했다. 그 끝에 내린 결론이 “내 음악은 어두운 게 아니라 진지한 거다”였다. 작업을 진중하게 대하고 결과물에 진지하게 임하다 보니 그런 것들이 음악에 가미된 게 아닐까 하고 덧붙였다.
말수가 적은 것도 사실인 것 같다고 했다. 낯을 가리는 면이 있고, 의도한 건 아니지만 “투머치하게 말을 하다 보면 자꾸 실수를 하더라고요”. 그래서 필요한 말만 하려다 보니 과묵하다는 소리를 듣는다는 것이다.
DJ를 하면서 자기 트랙을 튼 건 세 손가락 안쯤이라고 했다. 자기 곡의 BPM으로 플레이할 수 있는 업장이 별로 없고, 그렇다고 업장에서 틀기 위한 곡을 만들고 싶지는 않았다는 것이다. “프로듀싱하는 것과 디제잉하는 것의 어떤 아이덴티티를 정확하게 분리를 하고 있습니다.” 필자에게는 이 분리가 옥시모순이 말한 '진지함'의 가장 구체적인 모양으로 들렸다.
Misfit이 먼저 그림이 됐다
뮤직비디오를 꾸준히 만드는 이유를 묻자, 듣는 사람이 각자 이미지를 떠올리는 것도 좋지만 “제가 직접 제안을 해보는 것도 너무 좋다고 생각했었어요. 제가 만든 의도가 있으니까.”라고 답했다.
첫 EP에 실린 'Misfit'의 경우에는 제안이 반대쪽에서 왔다. 발매하고 한참 지난 어느 날, 영상 일을 하는 사람이 인스타그램으로 연락해 이 곡이 너무 좋아서 이 곡을 바탕으로 단편 영화를 만들고 싶다고 했다. 옥시모순은 흔쾌히 승낙했고, 촬영장에 한 번 구경을 갔다가 생각보다 큰 규모에 놀랐다. 다시 한참 뒤, 그 영화가 2022년 칸 영화제에서 상영하게 됐다는 연락이 왔다. “그래서 굉장히 놀랍고 신선한 그런 사건이었죠.”
첫 정규 앨범에도 영상에 대한 로망이 있었다. 단편 영화를 찍고, 그 영화의 사운드트랙을 정규 앨범으로 내고 싶었다고 했다. 현실적으로도, 자기 역량으로도 그 시기가 오지 않아서 일단 미뤄 뒀다.
처음 혼자 끝까지 믹스한 앨범
그 로망을 미뤄 두고 낸 첫 정규가 2026년 10월 1일 발매한 Inner Dance다. 제목에는 두 가지 뜻이 있다. 하나는 대놓고 댄스 트랙은 아닌데 내적 댄스를 불러일으킨다는 지인들의 말이다. 다른 하나는 시기다. 댄스 트랙을 만들고 싶다는 생각이 들 무렵이었는데, 반항하는 기질이 있어서 클리셰적인 댄스 트랙 대신 '옥시모순의 댄스 트랙을 만들어보자'고 했다. 11곡 가운데 1·6·11번은 무드 곡, 2~5번은 지금까지 해 온 스타일의 최신판, 7~9번은 앞으로 보여 주고 싶은 댄스 트랙으로 짰다.
이전 앨범들은 믹스를 다른 사람에게 맡기거나, Narcissism EP까지는 공동 믹스로 작업했다. 혼자 풀 세션 믹스를 한 건 이번이 처음이다. “정말 미흡하고 준비가 덜 됐지만서도 그래도 내 첫 정규는 내가 믹스를 해야겠다 라는 생각이 들었어요. 그래서 지금이 타이밍이다라고 저 혼자서 결론을 내린 거죠.” 다 자기 새끼들이지만 조금 편애하는 곡은 9번 'Ain't Nothing But'이다. 앞으로의 방향성을 정확하게 보여 준 곡이고, 그 방향은 작업하면서 잡았다고 했다. 발매 뒤에도 계속 듣고 있다.
2024년 Narcissism EP는 첫 피지컬 앨범이었다. 댄서블한 트랙이 아니라 감상용에 가까운 음악이라 팔릴까 하는 걱정도 있었다. 수소문해 찾은 유럽 배급사와 계약해 물량을 보냈고, 얼마 뒤 물어보니 보낸 것의 60%가 팔려 있었다. 거기서 힌트를 얻은 것 같다고 했다. “유럽은 다르구나.” 유럽에 가 본 적이 없어서 그 문화를 정확히 이해한다고 말할 수는 없다고 했고, 미지의 공간이던 곳에서 바이닐이 팔렸다는 얘기를 듣고 감격했다고 했다.
필자가 이 대화에서 가장 눈여겨본 대목은 셋이다. 자기 곡은 세 손가락 안쯤 틀어 봤다는 DJ가, MIXMIX에서의 첫 셋은 Inner Dance의 흐름에서 곡을 고르고 순서도 앨범 트랙리스트와 결이 비슷하도록 애썼다고 했다. 확정된 셋 20곡에 옥시모순의 곡은 한 곡도 없다. 앨범의 흐름을 다른 사람의 곡으로 옮긴 셋이고, 그 셋이 앨범을 얼마나 닮았는지는 스튜디오 세션에서 직접 들어 볼 일이다.
마지막 인사에서 옥시모순은 음악을 만드는 일을 좋아서 하는 '이기적인 행위'라고 불렀다. 그래서 잘 들었다고, 좋다고 해 주는 사람을 보면 “너무너무 감사함을 느끼고 또 겸손해지고” 한다고 했다.
