A DJ and producer who started out in Seoul and made her way through Thailand, Mexico City and Ibiza to Berlin. In 2018 she founded uju Records, whose first release was her own Estación Espacial, and she has played Mayan Warrior at Burning Man and Circoloco at DC-10, Ibiza. She has long played what she calls cosmic disco; lately, she says, she's been hearing 90s house, and is back into trance and even drum & bass.

“Music just won't let me go”

Shubostar went to Cancún having set DJing aside, for a photography job. She answered a posting for a photographer, sent her portfolio, got hired, and shot photos for about six months. Then she met DJ friends, started playing at their parties, and became a DJ again. Even the earlier move to Thailand had been a light decision: when a crew there asked her to join, in the year she was graduating, she thought there was nothing to worry about. It looked fun.

The question that runs through this conversation is a simple one: what does it look like when someone tries to put music down, and music picks her back up?

Tracks she almost never played

Describing that day's set, Shubostar said tracks she'd bought over the past year, ones she'd thought she'd probably never actually play, finally all came together and clicked. She started at a slightly higher BPM than usual. When the host said they'd met a Shubostar with a wider range of taste, she agreed: “A slightly expanded version.”

Expansion isn't only about that day's set. For years she played what she called cosmic disco, though it sat closer to indie dance; lately '90s house has started catching her ear, and she's back into trance and drum and bass. These days she plays a lot more house. The ear moved first; the sets followed.

The dining table in Mexico City

Shubostar made Estación Espacial, the first release on uju Records, while crashing at a friend's apartment in Mexico City. Two-bedroom place, friends showing up almost every night to drink, and she sat at the six-person dining table with headphones on and worked. “I really thought it was my last chance,” she said. “To avoid regrets, I had to put everything on the line.” The goal was one finished track a day.

That track eventually played at Burning Man. On the Mayan Warrior art car, a Monday night, the DJ booth shook from the sound system's vibration, and when she dropped Estación Espacial as her second track, the synth slowly rising from behind, chills ran through her whole body. The moon was visible in the distance. People walking around with small lights attached to them, twinkling like the Milky Way. A track made alone at a dining table, now coming out of that sound system in the middle of the desert. “What is happening?” She said she can't forget that moment.

She still hides in producing when she feels like she's falling short. “Just the comfort of feeling like I'm doing something” is what holds her self-esteem up. Release or not, the making itself holds her together. Estación Espacial is the evidence from that period; she says hearing it still brings her close to tears.

What the door is actually for

When the conversation turned to Berghain, what Shubostar wanted to set straight was its door. Instagram serves up “outfits that'll get you into Berghain.” People who make it post that they're “hip enough.” She found it odd, and felt the idea had gotten distorted.

As she's heard it from friends who've lived in Berlin a long time, Berghain started as a gay club. The filtering at the door existed to protect a space where queer people could be safe. “It's about whether you understand this culture and really won't cause harm to these people in there. If so, then come in and enjoy it with us.” Not a contest of who looks cooler.

On gentrification more broadly, her temperature was different. Watergate closed, and the club that opened in its place might be a bit more commercial, she said, though from the photos it looked amazing. But lines still stretch for hours outside clubs in summer. She added that maybe it's because she only goes to busy clubs; she doesn't really feel it.

What she means by outside voices is the gaze of others, the sense of what's supposed to look cool. The opportunities came from outside: a crew's invitation in Thailand, DJ friends in Cancún, a club owner who was one of Mayan Warrior's music directors. But each time, whether to say yes came down to her own sense that it would be fun.

At the end of the interview, she said that doing an interview in Korean after so long, being able to say what she wanted so easily, was “honestly kind of moving.”
