Hugh Hardie | MIXMIX SELECTS
A producer who first surfaced on Hospital Records in 2014 with
'Tearing Me Apart'. Colourspace (2017) and Shadows & Silhouettes made his name in liquid drum & bass - warm, soulful, built for the floor as much as for headphones. In 2022 he moved to Soulvent Records, and Juicebox (2023) let grime in - Footsie, Killa P, PAV4N, all lined up by Joe Goss, who runs the label. This year, the Hugh Hardie & Friends EP with EXEA, Circumference, Makoto and Amoss, two singles with Makoto, and a monthly show on Kool FM.

Hugh Hardie on following the idea wherever it goes
Hosted by Sara

On the seventh day of a self-imposed lockdown challenge, Hugh Hardie sat down with only hardware and a microphone — no loops, no samples — and somehow his cat Gretchen ended up on the track. The purring, compressed and distorted, turned into a gnarly sound. "You can start with a cat purr and make it into something crazy." But the bigger lesson of the week was about speed, not sound.
When the Idea Flips
There are hundreds of half-finished loops on Hugh Hardie's hard drive. He rarely goes back to them. “If the idea wasn't good enough at the time, why would it be good now necessarily?” So he keeps writing new ones. Working with Amoss, he met a process he hadn't used before: long bass notes played on a synth, a fifteen-minute audio take, then resampled from within. Asked whether a collaboration had ever ended up somewhere completely different from where it started, he couldn't name one, but he knew the feeling. It can happen: an idea starts out liquid and flips into something dark. “I think it's good to just follow the vibe, the flow of the idea.” The seven-day challenge made the same point more bluntly: each tune had to be finished by that afternoon, and there was no time left for second-guessing. “If you don't overthink your musical decisions, it can be quite liberating.” He also admits the usual cycle — a few hours on an idea, then setting it aside for another — is something he does all the time.

The Ones Who Got Here First
Makoto was already playing Seoul in 2004. Those were a good couple of years
for drum & bass in the city - LTJ Bukem played here too. When Sara brought it up, his first response was short: “Wow, okay. Him too.” Asked what it's like to work with someone who reached this city long before him, he said: “They were my heroes when I first got into drum and bass, and they still are. So it's cool to have them as friends now.” Two singles this year, 〈Lovesick〉 and 〈Got Me Trippin'〉, and a process that runs close to his own: start with a sample or a chord progression, build the music before the drums and bass line. Beyond the method, there's the timeline. He's been around since the 90s, Hugh said, “consistently making music, DJing, releasing such good music” — and “that sort of longevity and consistency and dedication is very inspiring to me.” London Elektricity is the other name he reaches for. They have a session lined up next week or the week after.
It All Comes Down to the Promoter
When the Spoonfed nights were happening, Cambridge had a thriving drum and bass culture. Now those events don't take place, and there are no consistent nights in the city. “It's all down to the promoters. Basically 100%.” Sara offered the other options: the right people, the space, a crowd that keeps showing up. “I think it's just all the promoter, really.” He had heard about DARKLIGHT before landing in Seoul — Makoto said it was a really cool event, and then London Elektricity said the same thing. Beyond that, he said, he didn't know much about the drum and bass scene here. “I'll find out for myself.” The track he'd likely bring out on Saturday is a new one made with Hoax, coming out soon on Hospital and mastered only recently. “It's one of my favorite things that I've done recently,” he said. “I think that will be a fun one to play.”
Near the end, Sara asked whether he had put any other random sounds into a tune since Gretchen. No, he said — maybe next time. A couple of weeks ago he had the microphone out for claps and clicks. Here, he said, he could try an old phone: pots and pans, birds, or the insects. Cicadas, maybe, or crickets — he wasn't sure. “So loud. Everywhere.”
Hugh Hardie,

Hugh Hardie가
