The Cost of Knowing Too Much

BOJVCK showed up at Ttukseom skatepark without warning. Six months gone, no message — just a board and a clear afternoon. The ten or twenty friends already there were stunned. He skated, then came to Seongsu for the interview, board still in hand. He talked fast the whole session.
The Album He Can't Make Again
I THINK YOU NEED SOME BREAK came out in April 2023, but BOJVCK had been producing since he was fifteen. Six EPs uploaded and pulled before that release. Seven years of accumulation before a debut. He still calls it his best work — and means it as a kind of grief. "I didn't know anything about club music back then. I just loved street culture, maybe even more than I do now. I was really just a kid." The track Break/Junkie was made the night DJ POOL introduced him to Ghetto Tech. He went home and built it without fully understanding what the genre was — 150 BPM, fast bass, looping vocal, close enough. "I just threw things at the wall and it landed." That not-knowing is gone now. He does shows, reads rooms, watches what people expect. The purity that made the album what it is has a price tag, and he's been paying it ever since.
A Name as a Promise to Himself
He chose the name BOJVCK at sixteen or seventeen, lifted from the Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman — a Hollywood star's decline mapped across middle age, drawn as a horse. The overlap with his own ambitions wasn't lost on him. Neither was the warning. "I've never once lived the way I thought I would. I figured if I took that name, I'd follow a similar path — but not that life." The name was a contract. The cap pulled low over his face follows the same logic: body image, face, the discomfort of watching himself in someone's story repost after a DJ set. The brim kept moving down. He's been doing modelling work — Milan, even — but frames it plainly as the alternative to a part-time job. Honesty is consistent in him. It shows up in the small things and the large ones equally.
Where He Keeps the Kid
Alongside BOJVCK, he runs Jet Trunk for sampling-heavy hip-hop, OM with producer y2mate.mp3 for French touch and industrial techno, a live setup project with DJ POOL, and a unit with percussionist-MC KimHan. "So many that people have stopped paying attention," he said, without complaint. BOJVCK stays its own thing — street-facing, sample-driven, the sound he landed on after moving through industrial hip-hop, Neptunes-era production, and finally Ghetto Tech. He wants that name to stay consistent. The other names are laboratories; BOJVCK is the vault — where the kid who made that first album stays intact. When asked about his Korean Music Awards nomination for Best Electronic Album, he skipped past the ceremony and went straight to the database — the well-organized archive of Korean music, year by year. "Someday a teenager is going to go in there and see my name. That's what matters to me." He wants the next generation to know this path exists: make this music in Korea, get nominated, build something real.
At the end of the session, he was asked to name three things he loves most. Cigarettes, first. Skateboarding, second. Third: nothing. Nothing else comes close, he said. On a good day at the park, he finishes, lights up, goes home, drinks with friends. Doesn't listen to music at all.

뚝섬한강공원 X게임장에 반 년 만에 나타난 BOJVCK를 친구들은 놀란 눈으로 맞았다. 연락도 없이 불쑥 나타난 그는 보드를 타고 성수로 왔다. 몸이 안 좋았다가 최근에야 극복했다고 했다. 인터뷰 내내 그는 빠르게 말했고, 자주 웃었다.
순수함이라는 사라진 재료
BOJVCK의 데뷔 앨범 I THINK YOU NEED SOME BREAK는 2023년 4월에 나왔지만, 그에게는 7년치 작업이 쌓인 결과물이다. 15살부터 프로듀싱을 시작했고, 음원 사이트에 올렸다가 내린 EP만 여섯 개다. 그래서인지 그는 지금도 이 앨범을 자신의 최고작으로 꼽는다. “그때는 클럽 음악에 대해서 진짜 아무것도 몰랐고, 정말 거리 문화를 좋아했으면 더 좋아했고, 그 정말 소년 소년이었어요.“ DJ를 하면서 돈을 벌고, 눈치를 보고, 어디서는 이렇게 해야 하고 저기서는 저렇게 해야 한다는 걸 알게 된 지금은 — 그 앨범이 다시 나올 수 없다는 것도 안다. Break/Junkie는 게토테크가 뭔지도 정확히 모른 채, DJ POOL에게 장르를 소개받은 그날 밤 집에 가서 만든 곡이다. “150 BPM, 좀 빠른 베이스, 반복되는 보컬 — 이건 게토테크인가 보다 하고 그냥 때려 맞춰서 나온 곡“이라고 했다. 그 무지가 지금은 돌아오지 않는다.
이름이 먼저, 음악이 나중
BOJVCK라는 이름은 16, 17살 때 지었다. Netflix 애니메이션 BoJack Horseman에서 가져왔다 — 20대 중후반에 성공한 할리우드 스타가 40대에 어떻게 사는지를 그린 블랙 코미디. 그는 그 캐릭터와 겹치는 지점을 인정하면서도 이렇게 말했다. “저는 제가 살면서 바라왔던 방향대로 간 적이 한 번도 없거든요. 이름을 BOJVCK로 지으면, 비슷하게 흘러가지만 저렇게는 안 살겠구나 싶어서.“ 이름은 선언이었다. 모자를 항상 쓰는 이유도 비슷한 층위에 있다. 바디 컴플렉스, 얼굴 컴플렉스 — DJ 세트 후 스토리에 올라온 자기 얼굴을 보기 싫어서 챙이 점점 내려왔다. 지금은 모델 일로 밀라노까지 다녀왔지만, 그건 맥도날드 알바 대신 선택한 생계 수단이라고 했다. 그 솔직함도 그의 방식이다.
소년을 보관하는 방법
BOJVCK 외에도 그는 여러 이름으로 음악을 낸다. 샘플링 기반 힙합을 하는 Jet Trunk, y2mate.mp3와 함께 프렌치 터치·인더스트리얼 테크노를 하는 OM, DJ POOL과 함께하는 라이브 셋업 프로젝트, KimHan과 함께하는 유닛까지. “너무 많다 보니까 사람들이 이제 관심을 안 가지는 수준“이라고 스스로 말했다. 그러면서도 BOJVCK라는 이름만큼은 지키려 한다. 다른 이름들이 실험실이라면, BOJVCK는 보관함이다 — 첫 앨범을 만들던 소년의 감각을 넣어두는 자리. “여기서 드라마틱하게 변화할 것 같지는 않아요. 이 소년스럽고 거리 문화스러운 걸 계속 유지할 것 같아요.“ 한국대중음악상 최우수 일렉트로닉 음반 부문 후보에 오른 소감을 묻자 그는 시상식보다 데이터베이스를 먼저 얘기했다. 언젠가 어떤 10대가 그 사이트에 들어와서 자기 이름을 발견하는 것 — 그게 제일 크다고 했다. 다음 세대가 이 장르로도 먹고살 수 있다는 걸 보여주는 것.
마지막으로 제일 좋아하는 것 세 가지를 물었다. 첫 번째는 담배, 두 번째는 스케이트보드. 세 번째는 없다고 했다. 보드를 잘 탄 날, 끝나고 담배 한 대 피면 — 그때 집에 가서 술 마시고, 음악은 안 듣는다고 했다.
