The artist who never intended to create

When Yoo Hee-yeol called him "Korea's best sound designer," HAIHM felt awkward. The classically trained pianist had never intended to become a creator. He stumbled into electronic music while considering engineering, stopped using vocals naturally, and gradually stripped away beats to find increasingly introspective sounds. His latest album FLOWFORM, released on Christmas Day, crystallizes these unintended journeys into a singular form.
Following Sound, Not Plans
It started with strange kick and snare sounds from MTV. "What we commonly know as kick and snare weren't there. There were these clanging sounds, weird sounds in their place, and that was so intriguing to me." After abandoning piano studies and briefly considering engineering, electronic music wasn't a destination but a waypoint. Because he was drawn by sound itself rather than any intention to create, he remained unbound by genre conventions or expectations. The path chose him, not the other way around.
Depth Through Subtraction
Looking back at early albums, he noticed "everything was so concentrated. Too much." The disappearance of vocals and reduction of beats happened organically. "I gradually started removing things one by one, focusing on one weighty element." The evolution from POINT.NA's packed enthusiasm to his current focus on the inherent presence of sounds reflects a decade of refinement. He's discovered the paradoxical depth that comes with minimalism — less becomes more profound.
When Fragments Become Form
FLOWFORM weaves together moments accumulated from years of dance collaborations and live performances. Originally 13 tracks, the album found its shape "like putting together a puzzle." "These pieces from different times and situations somehow gained unity simply because they were my music — that felt so satisfying." The accidental creator had found his natural breathing rhythm and tempo, watching scattered moments coalesce into completed form.
There's an irony in how his music induces meditation in listeners while he admits he "can't meditate well." Like how never intending to create enabled purer creation, all his unintended choices led him exactly where he needed to be. The journey continues. Unplanned, as always.
창작자가 되려 하지 않았기에 더 자유로워진 음악
유희열이 '한국 최고의 사운드 디자이너'라고 평했을 때 HAIHM은 난감했다. 피아노를 전공했던 그는 창작자가 되려던 적이 한 번도 없었다. 엔지니어를 꿈꾸다가 우연히 전자음악에 발을 들였고, 보컬을 하다가 자연스럽게 그만뒀으며, 비트를 덜어내며 점점 더 내향적인 소리를 찾아갔다. 12월 25일 발매된 정규앨범 《FLOWFORM》은 그렇게 의도하지 않은 여정들이 하나의 형태로 응고된 결과물이다.
소리에 이끌려 온 길
MTV에서 흘러나오던 낯선 킥과 스네어 소리가 시작이었다. "우리가 흔히 아는 킥과 스네어가 들어 있지 않다. 무슨 철렁거리는 소리가 나고 이상한 소리가 거기 들어가 있는데 어 그런게 너무 흥미로운 거예요." 피아노 전공을 그만두고 엔지니어를 고려했던 그에게 전자음악은 목적지가 아니라 경유지였다. 창작자가 되려는 의도 없이 소리 자체의 매력에 이끌려 온 길이었기에, 장르의 관습이나 기대에 얽매이지 않을 수 있었다.
덜어내며 더 깊어지는 방식
초기 앨범들을 돌아보며 그는 "모든 것들이 너무나 집약적으로 들어 있더라고요. 너무 많다"고 말했다. 보컬이 사라지고 비트의 비중이 줄어든 것도 자연스러운 변화였다. "점점 이게 약간 하나씩 덜어내고 어떤 그 묵직한 무언가 하나에 좀 집중을 하게 되고." 10년 전 《POINT.NA》의 열정과 욕심이 가득했던 소리에서, 지금은 소스 자체의 존재감에 주목하는 단계로 진화했다. 미니멀해질수록 심오해지는 역설적 깊이를 체득한 것이다.
형태를 찾아가는 순간들
《FLOWFORM》은 수년간 무용 작업과 라이브 공연에서 축적된 순간들을 하나로 엮은 앨범이다. 처음엔 13곡이었지만 "퍼즐 맞추듯이" 정리하자 자연스럽게 연결됐다. "각기 다른 시간에 각기 다른 상황에 있었던 곡들이었지만 결국에 이게 나의 곡이라는 이유로 뭔가 통일성을 갖는다는게 너무 뿌듯했어요." 의도하지 않았던 창작자의 길에서 찾은 자신만의 호흡과 템포가 하나의 완성된 형태로 응고된 순간이었다.
명상을 잘 못한다는 그의 음악이 듣는 이로 하여금 눈을 감게 만드는 아이러니. 창작자가 되려 하지 않았기에 더 순수한 창작이 가능했던 것처럼, 의도하지 않은 모든 것들이 그를 지금의 자리로 이끌어왔다. 그리고 그 여정은 여전히 진행 중이다.
