1. DJ를 시작하게 된 계기는 무엇인가요?

초등학교 때, 집에서 MTV를 보다가 Beastie Boys의 ‘Jimmy James’ 뮤직비디오를 봤어요. 레코드를 움직이는 이미지와 래퍼, 스케이드보딩, 여자실루엣 등의 이미지 콜라주를 보며 DJ를 해야겠다는 생각을 했어요. 부모님을 설득시켜 15살 때 첫 턴테이블을 구입하게 되었습니다. 이 이후로 지금까지 계속해 왔어요.

2. 준비하고 있는 Epicentre Seoul 레이블에 대한 소개를 해 주세요. 어떤 계획들이 있는지?

Epicentre Seoul은 서울을 기반으로 하는 Ghetto, Chicago, Balloom House를 전문으로 하는 레이블입니다. 저 J.fitz와 제 음악적 동료 Mignon으로 구성되어 있으며, 11월 중순에 첫 EP를 발매할 예정입니다. 이전부터 저는 음악을 만들 때 Workflow란 관념이 전혀 없이 작업을 해오면서 자주 매너리즘에 빠지곤 했는데, 이런 매너리즘을 극복하기 위해서 여러 가지 시도를 하게 되었어요. 그중에 스터디 그룹처럼 모여서 각자 작업을 하고 그것들을 일정 시간이 지날 때마다 공유하면서 서로 평가를 하는 시스템을 만들게 되었습니다. 이런 것들은 Workflow 향상을 통해 트랙을 만드는 생산성을 높이기 위해서입니다. 또한 음악을 ‘패턴’과 ‘작용’으로 단순화시켜 매번 트랙들을 만들 때마다 이 부분에 대해서 필기하고 다음 작업에서 의미의 확장을 시키려 하고 있으며, 최대한 DJ들이 실제 플레이를 할 수 있는 실용적인 트랙을 만드는 것이 가장 큰 목표입니다.

3. 한국에서 가장 신나게 음악을 즐길 수 있는 클럽은 어디라고 생각하세요?

대부분 이태원에 있는 클럽만 가다보니 편향되어 있겠지만 Cakeshop과 Pistil이 있습니다. 이 두 곳은 무엇을 틀어도 됩니다. 그리고 굉장히 다인종적 성격을 가지고 있어서 흥미롭습니다. 아, 최근에 경리단길의 Alley Sound라는 공간을 개인적으로 포텐셜이 강한 곳이라고 봅니다.

1. How did you start DJing?

When I was in elementary school watching MTV, there was the M/V of Jimmy James by Beastie Boys. The collage of moving images of LP, Rapper, Skateboarding, and silhouette of lady and else was really cool and make me thinking about to be a DJ. I bought my first turntable at 15 and been DJing so far.

2. Can you introduce your label, Epicentre Seoul? Do you have any special plan?

Epicentre Seoul is based on Seoul and mostly about the Ghetto, Chicago, Balloom House. Me and my collegue Mignon manages the whole part. We are working on our first EP which will be released in Mid-November. I had no concept of workflow which makes me easier to fell in mannerism, and tried to overcome it through different attempts. One of them is like the study group that working on their own style and share the work, feedbacks regularly. It aims to improve our productivity. Also, we make the music simplize into “Pattern” and “Reaction” for each track and expand the meaning through the whole process. Our biggest goal is to make practical tracks which DJ can play.

3. Which club do you recommend is the best to enjoy the music in Korea?

It’s mostly in Itaewon, Cakeshop and Pistil. I think it works for all kind of music. And the people visit there seems doesn’t matter with the nationality which is very interesting. Also, there’s new place launched in Gyungridan Road, Alley Sound.
